Hi! Remember us? The TrygKerz Family? Sorry for the lack of posts lately. This blog has been a bit neglected. Can I blame summer and it's super-duper busyness? Because I do :)

Yesterday, Edie helped me out with a little project and painted six squares for our rotating art wall. She did a great job!

This morning, I hung up the paintings. She was very proud of her work (and we are very proud of her).

Twenty One Months Old

Holy Moly! I better post a 21 month post before Edie reaches her 22 month mark. Sorry everybody! This should be an indication, however, on how super busy this month has been. But, I think that's just how late spring goes.

Edie, as you may tell from the picture below, is developing her sense of humor quite well. It's been really neat to see her laugh at her own jokes or funny things papa's says or does (passing gas may or may not be one of those things.) We can't wait to see how funny our little squirt will continue to become.

Aside from being funny, she is also pretty good with her words. Last month, she began putting sentences together... her first being "Sit Down, Papa." Since then, the sentences have become more and more complex.

As I said before, this month has been busy. We went to Garrison, N. Dakota for Easter, then, just a couple weeks ago visited Kris' sister Kathy in Columbia, Illinois (that's where the pictures below were taken). It was Edie's first time on an airplane and she was so, so excited. She held onto Ms Puppy nice and tight and did a super great job on the flight. We hope it's one of many big trips we take with our little Edie Pants.

Twenty Months Old

Even more language expansion this month for Edie. She is now regularly putting three words together to form little sentences. She knows what she wants... she knows what she doesn't want... and she's able to let you know exactly what she does or doesn't want to do. My favorite? "Snuggle Bed SimpSims?" (Translation: Mum, Papa, can we go your bedroom? You'll lay down, I'll hop all over the bed and spill your water, and we'll watch an episode of the Simpsons.)

We've had a really long winter this year but over the last few weeks we have finally experienced a bit of a thaw. This has allowed us to go outside a bit more and Edie has discovered her love for water puddles! Luckily, the center of street (which, to be honest, is more like a paved alley) has formed a puddle canal so we have plenty of water to splash around.

The Spring Dress

Happy Snow Day to all of you that live in the Red River Valley (and most of North Dakota). I'm convinced that we upper Midwesterners can handle disappointment better than any other segment of people thanks to our erratic weather. Remember this weekend and earlier this week when it was super, duper, nice outside? Remember when it reached 4o degrees and everything started to melt? Well, here is our house today:

Not so much melting going on. I guess Edie's dream of splashing through huge puddles of water will come true.

Anywho, way back when it was nice out I had the motivation to make Edie a pillow case dress. The fabric (a sheet) and the bias tape were thrift store find so the dress was practically free to make. I think I'll make a whole bunch of these for the summer. They are light and airy and super comfy. Oh, and Edie actually enjoys wearing it!

I also made her "baby" a matching dress.

Nineteen Months Old

This month, Edie fully jumped on to the emotional roller coaster we like to call toddlerhood. Big smiles, big tears, big laughs, big cries... usually within seconds of each other. As parents, we are learning how to cope with these crazy tantrums. Our trick? Keep a calm, straight face. Laugh about it in private. Know that this too shall pass.

Fun things this month? Edie can count to nine (well, with exception of the number four), recite parts of the ABC song and sing a little ditty about pretty much anything (Zippers? Yep "Zip, Zip, Zippers!"). She knows all of her books by name (or character names) and is starting to understand the story part of books. Overall, it's becoming much, much easier to communicate with her.

Edie's Valentine's Day Dress

It's been awhile since I've had the ambition (or the time) to sew. I finally decided to get back into the swing of things this past weekend and sewed Edie a cute little dress... just in time for St. Valentine's Day! Other than the dress is being a little long, it fits her quite well. I will have to work on sewing zippers though... still can't quite get that right.

I managed to grab one full length photo of Edie that was in focus (she's a toddler, don't you know)... not the best picture of her, but you get the idea.

And to make up for that not very awesome picture, here is a cute one of Edie and her papa.

Eighteen Months Old

Within the last couple of months, Edie has really transformed herself from infant to full fledged toddler. Yes, the tantrums have started and her mood is constantly up and down. But she is also grasping language at an unbelievable rate. She is well on her way to learning her ABCs and 123s and we often take time to practice them on our long journey to Horace 3 days a week. She has recently been putting two words together.

Another fun 18-month fact? She's head over heals in love with Elmo... we have no idea how it happened (well, we do... ahem, MeeMaw!). And so it has begun.

A visit with Lana and the kids

The little TrygKerz family braved the cold on Sunday and took a quick trip over to our friend Lana's house. Lana and her kiddos, Stella and Jacob, live just a couple blocks from us. It's been a awhile since we've made a visit... I blame the cold weather and our busy schedules... so, the excursion was way over due. Along the Lana and the kids, our friend Sam was there too.

Monday with Edie

Since Edie's birth (nearly) eighteen short months ago, I have stayed home from work on Mondays. Currently, I am technically "working from home" on Monday and Fridays and while I do get a lot of work done during nap times and in the evening, it's pretty much impossible to work while Edie is awake. And, to be honest, that is just fine with me.

Monday afternoons are the best. While our morning usually consist of running errands around town and the occasional thrift store stop, our afternoons are generally laid back and at home. She often moves from one thing to another very, very, very quickly. Whether it's putting her boots on, drawing, playing with Legos or reading a few good books, she is usually always busy. We have a great time and I really treasure those afternoons.

Seventeen Months Old

Another month of super growth for Miss Edie. She is becoming much taller and toddlerish and her head seems to have doubled in size, noticeable by the many shirts that will no longer go over her head.

Her language skills are growing and growing with new words every other minute. She is very good at making most of the alphabet sounds with exception of L and V. The letters R (ahhhwr) and Q (Ca-u-ooo) might be the cutest sounds that kid has ever made. And, of course her Minnesota O's are coming along very nicely. Our favorite new words this month? Applesauce, turkey (in reference to her turtle), toast, go (in her finest Fargo accent), MaPa (you can guess), and shower ("shaw-war").

Oh, and tooth count is now up to 10 with those first bottom molars coming through. I expect those top ones will show up within the next month or so.

Over Christmas, Edie gained a new member to her entourage. Mij, a very nice ugly doll, has become a new favorite friend and has joined her puppy and blankies as her constant companions.

A Quick Visit to Santa's Village

The TrygKerz family was a bit late in a lot of their Holiday festivities this year. We still have a present or two to purchase (crossing our fingers there is still things left at the store) and we just tonight went to see Santa.

This is the second year we've trekked out to Santa's Village at Rheault Farm in Fargo. The Fargo Park District does a fantastic job making it feel like the north pole (and Santa is the best Santa I've ever seen.) Last year, we went out there with my good friend Penny. Check out some photos from 2009 here.

This year (because of our lateness) we weren't able to make it until this evening. Edie has been referencing Santa for a couple weeks now. In fact, every thing with a red hat must be "santa, santa, santa!" She even knows that Santa says "ho, ho, ho!." However, tonight she wasn't too sure about that Santa guy. However, trains are still cool.

Sixteen Months Old

Recently, Edie has bee a little eating machine. We all know what that means, right? Yep. Growth spurt. And man, oh, man has she grown! Within days she had outgrown a good chunk of her clothes and I'm fairly certain this has been her quickest growth spurt to date! I guess it's time for another shopping trip.

Picking up new words every day, Edie has gone through a vocabulary growth spurt as well. It's becoming easier to communicate with her and she makes sure to tell us exactly what she wants (eat! go! bubbles? bath!). She is becoming increasingly curious and asks "what's this" or simply "this?" when she wants to know what something is.

Lately, she has been very, very, very passionate about a few things in her life... her tooth brush, her entourage (blankies, puppy) and her boots. It's been so fun to see her pick out and become attached to her favorite things.

Thanksgiving 2010

We spend the entire week of Thanksgiving in Minot with Kim (Kris' sister) and her wonderful family. It was a super week full of absolute laziness, wonderful food and some of the best people on earth.

Fifteen Months Old

Who needs television when you have a 15-month-old? This month has been a hoot as Edie's personality has really shown through. She is happy and active, curious yet careful... oh, and if you ask her she's absolutely hilarious. We think she's pretty funny too.

Her vocabulary has about tripled over the last month and she knows the sounds to about seven or so animals (including an owl, a lion and Onslow the cat). She has put a few words together but our favorite, by far, is "where is it?," which she picked up while looking for my missing phone last week.

She has really started to become attached to objects within the last few weeks and insists on having two of her favorite blankets with her when she sleeps along with her doll and her puppy (a super adorable corgi stuffed animal).

At her doctor appointment today, we found out she is pretty tall (in the 72%) but still a string bean (weight still below 22 lb). I guess it makes sense why she has been so hungry lately! All that cheese and peaches have gone straight to her bones.

This year, our little Edie dressed up as a wee Owlet for Halloween.

The costumes were all handmade and pretty darn easy at that. Edie's Owlet costume was a inspired by this costume from AlphaMom, the base of the bonnet/hat pattern was found at Made by Petchy and her wings/capelet pattern was found (and altered a bit) on my fave sewing blog Grosgrain Fabulous. Kris and my costumes were even easier... fake leaves from JoAnn's Fabric hot glued on to thrift store finds.

I'm already brainstorming for next year!

Edie's New Winter Hat!

Last night, in anticipation of a huge (possible) winter storm, I made Edie her first winter hat of the year. It was my first time working with fleece and I must say it was a great experience. Plus, considering the price of fleece plus the amount kids lose their hat and mittens, I think fleece and I will become the best of buds.

Fourteen Months Old

Little Miss Edie Pants continues to be movin' machine this month. She has gained some new foot skills that only can be described as "happy feet," and her climbing skills are almost scaring us. It's really fun to watch her bop around, but we're starting to get a bit scared for the upcoming years. We have already nicknamed her the Edie Tornado. Several times already, I've heard the comment from the random stranger "Oh boy, she sure likes to move." Yes, yes she does.

Edie is perfectly charming to strangers. Her new thing? Waving and saying "hi." She also waves at buses, trucks and doggies.

Lots of new words this month. She loves the letter Z, the sound a horse makes (Nay!) and Fihsh (fish). She uses new words every day, but it seems like everything is still a "doggie" or "Zee."

On the dental front, Edie has gained one new tooth with three more ready to make their debut any day now. Lots of red cheeks and a bit of drool.

Edie Explores the Seidler Sanctuary

The entire TrygKerz family are big, big fans of the Seidler farm. It's a super special place and this time around we've coined it the "Seidler Sanctuary."

Edie has been to the farm just once when she was a wee babe (all the way back at Christmas, during a blizzard), so it was really fun to watch her explore the place for the first time. She saw "doggie" (a cow) and a "doggie" (a horse) and a "doggie" (a dog) and a few "meow"s (kittens). She also (safely) rode a 4-wheeler for the first time and explored the hay bales. Pretty darn cool.

On a side note, expect Edie's 14 month report sometime within the week. It's been busy around here so sorry for the delay.

Over the last couple weeks, the letter Z has morphed into Edie's favorite thing. She loves to say Z. She loves to point at Z. She even knows when to say Z in the abc song and locate where it occurs in Dr. Seuss' ABC book ("I'm a Zizzer Zazzer Zuzz as you can plainly see.") So, I made Edie a Z shirt to celebrate her love for the letter Z.

As many photographers (and other people who like to be behind the camera) know, getting pictures of you and your family is sometimes difficult. Though you have loads, and loads, and loads of pictures of your family, there really isn't that many of you in the pics. Thank goodness for good friends who take good pictures.

My friend/colleague/neighbor Morea so generously photographed Edie, Kris and myself a couple weeks ago. She swears this will happen at least annually, so, you may just see pictures of our whole family more often.

Airplane!

Cousins, floating gourds and milestones!

Yesterday, we drove out to the Trygstad Compound to pick up little Miss Edie Pants after a weekend of fun with her grandma (now nicknamed "MeeMa") and grandpa. After hanging out for a bit, we went over to my aunt and uncle's cabin on Lake Lida and hung out with some extended family. Edie was able to play (and by play I mean steal toys) with her secondish cousin Brooklyn. What cute little ladies ;)

The rest of the day consisted of bead threading and walks in the garden.

This has been the highlight of my week:

Yep, that birdhouse gourd is hanging from a tree.... five feet from the ground. Uff da! The gourd spread it's vines at least 20 feet into the tree canopy... so, we'll see if there will be any other floating gourds before the season ends.

Just this morning, Edie sat and ate the table for the first time. What a big girl!

UsFest III

We spent another Labor Day weekend at the lake with our close friends and celebrated UsFest III. Of course, I couldn't resist photographing all the kids. But who could blame me? We adults stay pretty much the same year after year. But those kids.... those kids just get better and more awesome every year. And with one for sure on the way (Damon & Joslyn) and another one a maybe (Evan & Heidi adopting), UsFest can only grow bigger and better.

Thirteen Months Old

Edie loves books. On any given day in the TrygKerz household, you can see our little Chipperoo wandering around the house, book in hand, waiting for a willing reader. She'll read alone too... plopping down in one of her favorite little chairs, she'll open a book, point at the picture and say "Blah, blah, ahh!" in a language only she and the cats can understand.

She has been talking a lot lately, both gibberish and actual words. Her vocabulary includes new words such as Cheerios, up (looking up with such a positive tone), down, no- no-no, Bob, fish and just yesterday the phrase "read book."

It's been a busy month for Edie and the rest of the TrygKerz family. We celebrated her first birthday with lots of great friends and family during the Edie Pants Fun Pants Birthday Exstarvagazna. It was quite a turn out and Edie received a lot of super great gifts, many that, thankfully, do not make too much noise (some that do... we know who gave them so you better watch out!).

A couple weeks ago, we headed to the twin cities with her aunt Kim and cousins Zach and Chelsey. She road her first fair ride (the carousel) at Valley Fair and slept halfway through her first trip to IKEA and the Mall of America.

Jenni (her awesome babysitter) took a week off and August, so my cousin Kali came to stay with us for a week and watch Edie. Edie seemed to really enjoy it, and was so nice having Kali hang out for a week.

Last weekend, we traveled to central Minnesota for our annual UsFest friend reunion. Edie had a blast and enjoyed running around with the big kids and stealing their toys. A great time was had by all.

This month should be more laid back (thankfully).

Bee Bonnet

Check out little Edie's newest bonnet. I fell in love with the honeycomb fabric awhile ago, and I finally had a reason to buy it. With (our annual friend adventure) UsFest this weekend and fall around the corner, I thought it was about time to make a new bonnet. So, introducing the bee bonnet!

Next, I hope to make this cute little jumper for myself. I found some grey and white corduroy at a garage sale this summer, and I think it will make the most adorable dress for fall.

Tourists in a Familiar City

Along with the Engelhard Family (or part of it... Kim, Zach and Chelsey), the little TrygKerz family took a fun trip to the twin cities. We go to Mpls./St.Paul fairly often (well, not so often after the birth of Edie) but usually head right to St. Paul to visit our friends. This time, we took a different approach and did all the touristy things we never do.

We drove down Thursday and spent the day at Valley Fair. It was Kris' first time riding a roller coster. At first, I think he was a bit afraid (okay, really afraid). But, after the first ride on the Wild Thing, he was hooked. Valley Fair might become an annual tradition now. Unfortunately, their selection of rides for a 1-year-old isn't so awesome. We did ride the carousel and we have pictures (and video) that we will post very soon (in otherwords, they are stuck on our other camera).

On Thursday evening, we headed to Hastings to visit with the Richardson family. Chad is fellow wedding photojournalist/MSUM Advocate Almuni/Winter Thaw Participant and editor of the Hastings Star-Gazzette. We hung out, took some pictures (will post on the photo blog this week) and ate some amazing Puerto Rican Food (thank you Lisa!). Here are a few photos from Hastings:

Friday morning and afternoon was spent at the Mall of America where Chelsey found all sorts of fun stores and I finally bought something nice for myself. Kris, Kim, Chelsey and Zach went to a Twins game at Target Field on Friday night while Edie and I chilled in the hotel and took a fun trip to IKEA (of course!).

The whole purpose of the trip was to take some graduate photos of my niece Chelsey. I've been photographing Chelsey for a very, very, long time. She is so extremely photogenic, so, naturally, she is one of my favorite subjects. I decided we needed something new and different for her pictures, so we decided to take a trip to the twin cities to take her pictures. After numerous recommendations to visit the St. Anthony Main neighborhood, I knew it was the place to go. Too bad the GPS doesn't know where it is. We ended up at the Old Mill Ruins (also awesome) and eventually found our way to where we wanted to go.

A Review of the New Cat Litter by Onslow

From time to time at the Trygkerz blog, we turn our attention to our feline companions to allow them their say. They are the Kitten/Cat Caucus, a loose, disorganized collective of exactly two: Onslow and Pauline. Onslow took some time out from his busy schedule of batting at mosquitoes and mrowling by the back door to file this review of the new cat litter we began using this past weekend.

Hello, friends, and welcome to my first missive for Trygkerz Chronicles. I write to you in a time of great excitement and apprehension among myself and the other cat in the household, whatshername. You see, the humans purchased and began using a new brand of cat litter. This is was an earth-shattering moment, and I simply had to share my reactions with you, dear reader.

At first blush, the litter was noticeably different. Its floral scent and granular structure smaller than that of Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat litter told me that this may not be the ride for me. But as I took my first step into the box, I realized that my paws were caressed in a way I had never felt from the litter box. This was litter of love, not of antagonism.

My first usage, a tinkle, offered a run-of-the-mill experience. Clumping action was satisfactory although only a few grains stuck to my fur. Ah, but my second usage, a log, revealed the true character of this litter. Its floral scent complemented the smell rather than beat it over the head. I felt a palpable sense of joy as I recklessly flung more litter over the top of the log with my hind legs.

In sum, I applaud the humans' superior judgment in their selection of a new litter. I can think of no better substance to accept my outstanding waste.

Frock by Friday: Wednesday, Saturday and Done!

As promised, I finished my Frock by Friday™: The Anda Frock and I'm blogging about it for you today. It's been a super busy week around here, so, unfortunately, I didn't finish until Saturday morning. Oh, and I did sew on Thursday but forgot to take a picture (it was the mid section the dress). Anywho, without further ado, Wednesday and Saturday's pictures:

I'm some what pleased with the results, though there are few things I would change. First, I would make sure to shorten the pattern instead of figuring how to shorten the hem after the dress is sewn. It was a big struggle Saturday morning when I had to figure out how to take 7 whole inches off the bottom of the dress. Also, I wasn't crazy about my fabric choice in the end... I think next time I attempt this dress it will be with some nice, comfy jersey (t-shirt fabric). I also would make a few tweaks to the top of the dress.

All in all, I think it's pretty cool that I made a dress. The pattern was super easy and there is no doubt I could make the next one super, duper quickly (and a lot better). I can't wait until the fall when I can where this dress some orange tights and cardigan.

The Kitten/Cat Caucus on Edie's First Year

We last sat down with the Kitten/Cat Caucus over a year ago when we first broke the news of our baby to our cats, Onslow and Pauline. It's been a roller coaster ride since then for the Kitten/Cats, a roller coaster of peeing on stuff and sleeping.

I caught up with the Kitten/Cat Caucus for a frank discussion between naps.

Kris: Hey guys. How have you been?

Onslow: Well, to tell you the truth, things are going pretty well. I like that little human of yours. What's her human name? Ee-dee? Ha! Your language is something else. I call her (emits ugly meow) which, in your language means something like "one who smells of milk, drops green food and grabs fur on occasion." She makes life around here dynamic and exciting, which is fitting for a cat like me. Yes, things are going quite well for old Onslow here.

Pauline: (Under her breath) Well sure, when you get all the good window seats whenever you stinkin' please.

O: What was that?

P: Everything's great!

K: Edie's a year old now. I know there was a big period of adjustment when she started to crawl and chase you around, but how have things gone since then?

P: I go away. Far, far away. As far as I can get.

O: That kitten human is such a little rascal. You know, she reminds me of myself at that age, precocious and ready for mischief. Ha! I was quite the rambunctious kitten!

P: (Mocking Onslow under her breath) I was quite the rambunctious kitten, blah blah blah.

O: What was that?

P: I said 'ha ha ha!'

O: Like me, Edie seems ready to grab the world by its horns and really let herself shine. She's capable of anything, you know, just like me. If she had sharp claws, excellent hunting and fighting skills, striking fur, and a roar that makes the house shake, why, we'd be the same cat!

P: (Mocking Onslow under breath) We'd be the same cat, blah blah blah.

O: Hey, you know what! Shut up. Shut up!

P: I. Am. So. Sick of you. Pushing me around! My fur is clumping because of you!

O: No, your fur is clumping because you spend all your time talking to Ceiling Cat instead of grooming! You see this fur? Do you see this fur? That doesn't come from just laying around for 22 hours a day. That comes from laying around 21 1/2 hours a day and spending a half and hour giving a crap about my appearance. And, not for nothing, but did you eat the last of the food last night?

P: No. Uh. The humans did it?

K: Don't drag me into this.

O: You're lying. (Turning to me.) Do you see this? Do you see how she treats me? Speaking of, do you have any treats?

P: Oooh! Treats!

K: Uh, sure. Treats. Here you go. (Hands them treats.)

P: Wow, look at this. We are just burning through 3rd afternoon nap time.

O: Yeah. Human, go over there so I can sit here. Scootch over. I want to do some Cat Tai Chi'h and really stretch out.

K: Ok then. Good talk, guys.

Both snoring. Yes, they snore.

A Year of Parenthood

So, it was Edie's birthday yesterday. I wish her the happiest of birthdays, and I don't say that in any sense of obligatory parental duty. I say that because Edie is a wonderful person, full of joy and fascination, with a hearty laugh and a love of nature. I just like her. She's fun to be around (when she's not crabby).

Edie's birthday also means we've spent a year as parents. In that time we've learned a lot, not just about being parents but about being people. So much more of the world makes sense after you've been a parent, and I thought I'd mark this momentous occasion by talking about a few of the things we've learned, like:

Perpetual fear - The wisest parenting advice I got? "Being a parent is about coming to terms with the fact that you're perpetually terrified." It's true, so one of the hardest things to learn as a parent is when to let go, when to let your kid make their own decisions, and when to step in and force the issue. While I could fret, worry and rule Edie to no end, I know that it eventually becomes counteractive.

Patience - That screaming kid in the grocery store that I used to complain about under my breath? No problem now. I'm always grateful when it's not Edie.

Straightening up and flying right - In my 20s, I was a hippie/loner type who read too much Jack Kerouac and played "embellishment guitar." Now I read Newsweek and learn three-chord songs. I still feel cool, by the way, although I am fully aware of the fact that I am so not cool.

How people go from little small people with issues to large big people with issues - After observing Edie now for a year, I realize that many of her emotional responses to stimuli aren't much different from an adult's. She gets frustrated, angry, ecstatic, thoughtful, contemplative, and confused, along with many other complex emotions. She has a lot to learn about how things work and how they affect her, but she has learned what the effects of the world are - varying degrees of plus, minus, and "I dunno."

The whole world is freaking awesome - After taking Edie to Folk Fest this year, I learned exactly what people mean when they say that they see the world through the eyes of a child (I think that was a Michael McDonald song). There was a point when, outside in the sun and air, she started dancing to Andrew Bird and Konono No. 1 and I figured that this was about the most awesome thing EVER. Then, just a couple nights ago, she started drawing with a piece of sidewalk chalk and I thought that this was about the most awesome thing EVER. You see where I'm going here. Everything is the most awesome thing EVER. You can pay big money for pills that do that, or you can just watch a kid make their way in the world.

They see and learn more than we think - Edie puts on her little monkey bag the same way I put on my bag. She's always trying to put on Britta's shoes. She picks words up out of thin air. We hear her practicing words and using her voice in her crib. While paying attention to her, it's easy to see ourselves reflected back at us. This may be the most potent lesson learned from your children - who you are. One of my parenting edicts is to avoid negative feedback loops, meaning that I try not to let negative situations spiral out of control by piling on more negativity. I see this as being more and more important as time moves forward.

There's a lot more to come - Here I'm talking about Edie like she's fully grown and ready to move out of the house. We're still caring for a vulnerable and impressionable youngling here and the prospects of that make me dizzy with happiness.

It's been a good year so far, Edie Pants. Thank you for all you've taught us and are about to teach us. Happy birthday.

Edie+Birthday=Cake

We are having an official first birthday party for Edie in a few weeks, but we had to have a little celebration of our own this afternoon. After work, we all headed to the Milestones Photography studio for a mini photo shoot and some good old fashion cake eating.

Edie love the balloon I gave her and I imagine it'll be a favorite toy until either it poops out or the cats destroy it.

She didn't know what to think of the cake at first, but found out quickly it contained sugar.

Fifty Two Weeks Old

I cannot believe how quickly 52 weeks can fly by. Just one year ago, I was sitting in the hospital holding a brand new, fragile baby girl. Today, I chased around a hearty toddler and encouraged her to meow at the cat. How quickly life can change.

Edie is such a joy. She is kind and funny and a little mischievous. She has the sweetest little voice and the cutest little dance moves. Observant since birth, she has a great eye for detail and learns things very, very quickly. There is absolutely no doubt that she is a mover but she is also very careful.

I'm totally head over heals in love with my daughter (can you tell) and she has made our little family even more awesome.

This week, Edie has been perfecting her words. She can say "doggie" and "kitty" more clearly, and she has added "uh oh" to her list of most used words. She barks. She meows. She squeals with joy. It is fantastic.

Edie and our cat Onslow have formed quite the bond. She gives Onslow hugs and Onslow gives her purrs. He allows her to pet him and doesn't mind (too much) when she gets a little rough. Pauline (the other cat) on the other hand still runs at the sight of little Miss Edie-Pants.

We had a little birthday celebration/photo shoot this afternoon at the studio and discovered she really digs balloons. Go figure. She also likes cake,

So, the First 52 weeks series is now complete. But, no fear! I shall continue writing about Edie and her various milestones once a month!

Frock By Friday - Monday, Tuesday & Fabric

Yay! Three days down and two to go in sewing the Frock by Friday™: The Anda Frock. Like I mentioned last week, I'm following the August edition of A Frock by Friday tutorial on the Grosgrain blog.

Here is my fabric choice. I'm pretty sure it's some kind of rayon. In any case, I bought 5 yards of it for $5 at St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store in Fargo. Not sure how old the fabric is, but I'd guess early 1970s.

So far, so easy. I only have a few pictures to share with you today. But, let me assure you I did do my Wednesday night sewing and I will share the rest of the pictures as soon as I complete the dress. As of right now, the dress resembles a '60s era MooMoo. I'm hoping the band around the waist will class it up a bit or styling will be key.

Frock By Friday!

Since obtaining my sewing machine last February, I've been sewing up a storm. It all started with a few pillow cases and a bow. I moved on to some super bonnet making and, then, continued to make bonnets. I've now made 11 bonnets total, 6 just for Edie-Pants.

Last week, I sewed my first skirt (black and white with yellow pockets) and a few "hooter hiders" (or breast feeding covers) for a few new moms in my life. Next week I shall begin my biggest project to date... a dress!

There are so many awesome sewing blogs out there and I've pretty much subscribed to all of them in my google reader. One of my favorites, Grosgrain, does a Frock by Friday tutorial at the start of each month. This will be my first month participating and I urge any sewers out there to join me. I'll blog about my progress to keep me motivated.

Fifty One Weeks Old

In one week our sweet baby Edie will be in one year old. I'll avoid being too sappy this week as I'm sure my post next week will be full of "I can't believe this" and "I can't believe that." Instead, I'll give you a true update of Edith's happenings this week.

For about a month or so we've been working on teaching Edie some basic sign language. I'm happy to say that it has finally clicked with her this week and she is now appropriately using the sign for "all done" and "more." We added "hungry" and "thirsty" to our signing regiment and we will begin teaching her "please," "thank you," and "sleep/tired." I'm so pleased how fast sign language has clicked with Edie.

She continues to mimic some of our behavior such as wrapping things around her neck (like a scarf), pulling shirts (or a pair of shorts) above her head, stepping into a pair of my shoes while I put on a different pair of shoes and carrying a little purse around the house.

Oh, and have I mentioned she is a master walker now?

Word of the week: "Jen-nee" when referring to Jenni her babysitter (and my good friend).

Fifty Weeks Old

Edie is 50 weeks old. You know what that means, right? Yep, in just two weeks are little peanut pumpkin bean sprout is going to be one-year-old. I can hardly believe how fast a year can fly by.

We've been reading to Edie since she was born and really amped up our reading routine when she was about 6 months old, or so. In the last few weeks, she has become increasingly interested in books. She pages through them, looks at the pictures and feels the pages. The bookshelf is the first thing she goes to when we are playing in her room. It's really fun to see her become so interested in books and we hope that will blossom into a love of reading in the future. By the way, her favorite book so far is Goodnight Moon.

Edie has been mimicking us a lot this week, from fun little sounds, to combing her hair. After a few good lessons of hugging inanimate objects, she has been giving the stuffed animal Drunk-Uncle-Fox big hugs.

Speaking of sounds, there has been a lot of vowels coming out of her little mouth this week. The best part? Her o's totally sound upper mid-western (very, very, very long).

This week, it dawned on me (once again) that my little baby Edie is growing into a toddler. Not only is she getting taller, but her little face is changing and her features are becoming more and more defined. Her expressions have reached a whole new level and our little tot is becoming more animated each day.

She has been using a lot more "words" and has been jabbering to herself (in her own language) a whole bunch this week. We discourage grunting but we don't mind when she tests her vocal cords in other ways such as the awesome winding "EEE-ah-EEE-ah-EEEE" sound she often uses during boring car rides.

A little more confidence in her walk this week too... and I imagine she'll be running around within the next few months. (Please, help us)

Edie was so lucky to attend her very first music festival this week. Our little family (along with my parents and my brother Dana) drove up to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for the Winnipeg Folk Festival. This is a yearly tradition for our family, so, it was fun to initiate little miss Edie Pants into the folk fest club. She was a great little camper and seemed to really enjoy the outdoors, the people and the music.

In other news, her pointing skills have reached a whole new level and she can now point with both fingers. She is also talking more and more, and says "Kitt" "Treeeeys" "Pa" and, again, something that sounds like "Papeeen" (Pauline?). She is become a more confident walker, but still needs a steady surface to stand up. She has also become very, very good and climbing things (including picnic tables) but still struggles with stepping down.

One of Edie's biggest first year milestones was completed this week when she took her first official steps. It was fabulous, and we managed to get it on video. Unfortunately, since those first momentous movements she not taken more that two or three steps. In time, I suppose, we will look back fondly on the days when she simply crawled.

We are pretty sure she is calling Onslow and Pauline (as well as the picture of three cats on the box of cat litter) "kitty". Though, with baby-speak, one cannot me sure. What we do know, is that she uses Mahmahmummum is reference to me. In fact, the most common view I have of Edie Pants is the view you see in this week's picture. As I've mentioned before, our little Edie is very much a Mama's girl... and she is usually attached some how to my leg.

Minot Visit

As noted in the previous post, we went out to Minot a couple weekends below to visit family and celebrate the upcoming arrival of baby D. Because of my lack of summer weekends due to my job, we do not visit our family in central North Dakota in the summer very often. So, it was quite a treat to see everybody in the summer (and made hanging out even better as we could do it outside!)

A Shower for Dana and Baby D

Our wonderful niece Dana and her wonderful husband Dave are expecting a baby boy due in July. A couple weekends ago, the TrygKerz family traveled to Minot to visit family and celebrate the upcoming addition.

Edie's first buddy Maggie, born just 17ish hours after our little rascal, is set to move to Iowa at the end of the week. Maggie's mum Penny and I thought it was quite important that we get the two girls together before the big move. It's been awhile since they've hung out... and, for the first time in a long time, Edie was really, really, really bashful. She warmed up a little bit but for the most part did her own thing. Maggie, on the other hand, seems to really enjoy hanging out with another little person.

We took a great trip out to central North Dakota this weekend. Usually, when we visit family near Minot, we drive right through Bismarck. Of course, the "we are almost there" thing doesn't work very well when you have a baby who needs to get out of the car. Luckily, we have some pretty great friends in Bismarck, and I think stopping will be something we always do!

Ashley and Neil had their twins Addison and Carter about five weeks ago. It was great to meet them of the first time, play with nearly 4-year old Kaitlyn, and catch up with Ashley. My friend Kari even stopped by during her lunch break!

Forty Six Weeks Old

Over half way through her tenth month Edie is giving us major hints of her personality. Things we know:

She is active - not able to sit still for even short periods of time UNLESS she is tired or really, really entertained by something.

She is rebellious - The long periods of time where isn't moving usually consists of her getting into mischief... you know, yanking cords, finding and playing with random electronical devices, trying to climb dangerous looking stairs.

She is vocal - Edie has discovered a lot of fun words (mumumumum, da da da, ahhhhh, baybeah, and, just this week, ah-doh-ah-doh-ah-doh-ah-doh) and she uses them, a lot.

She is social - Sure, she has brief moments of being shy. But, give her 30 seconds and she'll be taking your glasses off your face meanwhile flashing her winning smile and telling you all about it.

She is happy - No doubt our Edie pants is a very happy child. She is usually smiling, which, in turn, makes us very happy.

She is Mama's Girl - Yep, as of right now Edie is my #1 fan. Even when she has having the time of her life with someone else, if I enter the room it's straight towards mum-mum-mum-mum.... for good, or bad.

It's been a fun week with Edie. She has begun to point at random objects and, in turn, we have started to tell her about those random objects. She continues to adore Onslow and Pauline (our cats) and points at them the most. This weekend we visited her Aunties Kim and Karmen as well as a lot of her cousins. She also met her Grandpa Myron and Great-Grandpa Tony.

I am not sure what the proper definition of a toddler is, but I am pretty sure Edie has entered this next stage. This week, Edie has been busy as ever. She has perfected removing items from shelves, bags, drawers. Her crawling abilities have reached a whole new level and cruising along just about any surface seems very, very, very easy for her. She gets very excited by pretty much everything, and, of course, she must check it out.

Also this week, she discovered how to stick out her tongue and quite enjoys showing us her new skill. In addition, her top two teeth finally broke through.

Like I mentioned in her 44 week post, Edie attended her very first baseball game last night. We had a great time and stayed until the end of the 7th inning. Thank you Linda Ottesen for the great tickets and Ann-n-Dan for joining us!

Our little Edie-Pants reached a couple cool milestones this week. She attended her first baseball game last night (see picture) and lasted all the way through the end of the 7th inning. She practiced her new clapping skills (also a new milestone) at the game and charmed everybody in the box suite.

Even cooler than baseball, this week Edie used the words MumMumMum and Pop in reference to me and Kris. Do these count as her first words? She has also been making a sound that sort of sounds like "baby."

Ten-month-old Edie continues to be quite a charmer. Just today, I was stopped at the grocery store by four nice strangers who informed me that my little girl was adorable and quite smiley. This is not uncommon. She particularly has an effect on nice elderly men. Yep, world... you better watch out.

Edie has begun to master a few baby "tricks" (sounds bad, but I'm not sure what else to call them). She almost has the bye-bye wave down and just this week she has be responding to "So Big!" We are still working on clapping.

Random news of the week? Edie really enjoys the song "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga. We don't know why... but, Edie does a little dance every time she hears the song.

About a month or so ago, Edie's grandma Deb mentioned that although Edie is super cute she could never, ever, be a Gerber baby. Why? Well, you see, Gerber babies are sweet and innocent. Gerber babies are full and round and love to snuggle. Most importantly, Gerber babies do not have mischievous glimmer in their eyes.

We love that our Edie-Pants is active and curious. We are thrilled that we are already noticing she has a sense of humor (she's our little jokester). We couldn't be happier knowing that she is NOT Gerber baby material!

Little Edie's top teeth are pushing their way to make a debut any day. This week, there has been a lot of tears, swollen gums and little sleep during the day (unless you count her ginormous nap at Jennifer's this morning). But, in between teething spells, our Chiperoo has been lively and smiley as ever.

She is just over nine-and-a-half months old and we're really starting to see less "baby" and more "kid" in her facial expressions and mannerisms. She's been practicing talking a lot lately including a quiet, whispering babble. There are plenty of a "mum, mum, mums" and "Dah! Da da da das" going around. But, we know they aren't directed towards either of us. In fact, we refer to Kris as "Pop" instead of Dad, Daddy or Dada. I am "Mum." We'll see what Edie refers to us as once she's starts putting words together.

I just realized that Edie has spent more time breathing real, live air then she did baking in my belly (she was born at 38 weeks). I can't believe she is already forty weeks old!

We took our first trip together last weekend to Duluth with my parents and brother. We had a very good time, although little Edie had trouble sleeping... well, she hardly slept at all (which meant everyone didn't sleep). We think it was combination of things... new place, long ride, lots of activity. Next time, there are a few things I would do different. I guess we can file this experience into the "things we learn as first time parents" file.

On Monday night, we started sleep training Edie using the Ferber method. First night was a little rough. She cried for about 40 minutes and a little in the early morning. But, Tuesday (last night) went very well. She cried for less than two minutes and woke up at 6:15 a.m. Woo!

Edie had her 9 month check up on Monday. Her stats:

Weight: 17.1 lb (17%)

Length: 27.3 inches long (37%)

Head: 17.3 inches (43%)

Duluth

This past weekend, Kris, Edie and I traveled Duluth, Minn., for a little spring trip with my mom, dad and brother Dana. We had a nice time despite all of our lack of sleep (courtesy to little Miss Edie Pants) and a flat tire (courtesy of a large rock on the interstate). Duluth is a wonderful city with very good beer (Thank you Fitgers!).

We stayed at the Black Bear Casino Resort (my mom, queen of good deals, managed to get a killer deal) which luckily had a pool. So, Edie went swimming for the very first time!

The next day, we traveled to Duluth.

We visited the Glensheen Mansion a gorgeous early 20th century mansion on the lake. The mansion is run by the University of Minnesota Duluth who give quite a historic tour. I wasn't allowed to take pictures inside, but here are a few of us outside.

We were also able to spend sometime in Duluth Harbor. I have a thing for parks by lakes.

Tuckered out... don't let this fool you though. She still slept very little that night.

Sunday, we drove back... I went the wrong way on Highway 210 and ended up at Jay Cooke State Park. I took the opportunity to take a picture of myself.

Thirty Nine Weeks Old

Since her little teeth have cut through, our nine-month-old Edie Pants has been much more of a happy camper. It's so nice to see a smile on her face rather than a consistent crabby look (which she had perfected the last couple months).

Active as ever, she zooms around the room at remarkable speed these days. And, just twice, she has stood up without support. I imagine she'll be walking sooner than we think.

Edie will go on her first spring trip this weekend as we are headed to Duluth for a little R&R. We look forward to traveling with our little bugaboo, and we know it's just one of many family trips we will take together.

The afternoon after I posted last week's update, Edie's second tooth cut. She now has two adorable teeth to show the world. They inch higher and higher each day.

Edie has become more and more adventurous over the past few weeks. She can climb up (not down) stairs, empty every flat surface (books, cell phones, keys, dvds, she doesn't discriminate) at her height and has just began to figure out how to open cabinet doors. Our little busy body seems to be every where... and it's only just begun.

After I don't know how many months of drooliness, crabbiness and general anticipation, Edie's first tooth has finally cut! It's a sharp little bugger and since it's debut on Saturday, it has revealed even more of itself. It's companion tooth should arrive soon (we can see it just on the surface).

We are trying to get Edie more on a consistent feeding schedule. I will be returning to work full time in May and we want to make sure she is eating solid food regularly (we haven't been too good up to this point). So far, so good. We are currently in the process of eating sweet potatoes for lunch.

Thirty-six weeks old... 36! Where does the time go, honestly? My, oh, my.

Several times this week, Edie's voice has reached an octave not humanely possible (during both crying fits and happy squealing). She has also been especially active, and is coming close to climbing everything in sight.

Edie has also become very attached to me lately. Though I love to hold my little munchkin, I do hope this is something that passes sooner than later. It's hard to get anything done when an infant is (literally) attached to my leg.

Thirty Five Weeks Old

Our sweet little 8-month-old is becoming a master crawler, stander and generally active kiddo these days. This weekend, she climbed her first step (though getting back down proved to be more of a challenge than she had anticipated).

Still no tooth, but I swear I saw a little white beginning to pop out on the bottom left. Maybe by next week that pearly white will finally show the light of day.

We've spent a lot of time outside the last few weeks after being stuck in the house all winter. Edie is a big fan of grass and leaves.

Easter Weekend

We had a wonderful weekend out at the Trygstad Compound. Beautiful weather, awesome food and great family time.

On Saturday, we went for a walk on the search for pussy willows. We were lucky to fid out that they were out in full gorgeousness!

Edie also hung out with the chickens a bit.

Thirty Four Weeks Old

As much as it pained me to do it, I finally cut Edie's bangs. The long wispy strands were just too much of a nuisance, and the threat of Edie eating clips (and her constant fight to get them in) was just too large. So, she has bangs. The verdict on my hair cutting ability is still out.

Teething has been the issue of the week. The last few days (and nights) have been especially difficult in the TrygKerz household. Poor Edie has been sleepless most evenings and pretty irritable all day. Poor little Chiperoo.

On a fun note, since last week Edie has been practicing, to herself, waving. This morning, before Kris left for work he waved to her and she waved back! She has been doing it all day and seems rather amused with her new found talent.

No tooth yet. I feel like I've been writing that little sentence for a long time now. Yet, it's true again this week. We really have to be inching closer to the new arrival though. This week, Edie has been unusually fussy, drooly, clingy and sleepless, as well as always chomping on her little fingers.

Our determined little child has spent the week figuring out how she can stand up. She pulls herself up on everything from small plastic totes to her mum and pop. We should have known crawling wouldn't be enough to satisfy little miss Edie Pants.

Likewise, diaper changes have become nearly impossible.

She has also started (what we think is) singing to herself. During boring rides in the car, we'll hear a little chirp, chirp, chirp coming from the back seat. We can only assume she is singing "The Itsy Bitsy Spider", her favorite song to date.

Thirty One Weeks Old

The little TrygKerz adventurer continues to get better and better at moving around. She can pull herself up to standing on the landing stair to our loft and is pretty good and crawling to us from a good distance (even when we call her name from another room). We bought our first baby gate and hope that it prevents Edie from toppling down the stairs.

She continues to be quite a charmer, smiling at every random person she views. However, during a birthday party for our friend's daughter last weekend, we did notice that Edie is beginning to get a little stranger anxiety when held by people she doesn't know.

Bonnet & Dress

I had quite a successful weekend of sewing. Yesterday, I made a bonnet and today I made a dress.

It's fun to work on these little projects and slowly, yet surely, I'm getting better at sewing.

Our little crawling machine's mobile abilities have improved tenfold in just a week's time. Our poor cats have coward in fear as Edie located their food dish and has become more efficient at pulling their fur (and crawling after them). She is also managing to find every cord and piece of paper to put in her mouth, and last night while taking her bath, Edie pulled herself up to standing. It's been quite a week for Edie Pants.

The joke of the week is "the crawl and complain." When Edie is frustrated, but still determined, she'll continue crawling and whine at the same time. It's pretty darn funny.

Twenty Nine Weeks Old

Well, my friends, we have a crawler on our hands. As expected, Edie loves her new found talent and we are officially preparing for months (years, probably) of watching her every move. Though we're a little scared, it's also really great watching her learn how to move around. It brings her so much joy.

We also have new veggies to add to her food list: Peas (as you know), Green Beans, Sweet Potato and Broccoli. Woo!

*This photo may be familiar to some of you who read my photo blog as I posted it yesterday with some random details. I usually photograph Edie every Wednesday, but I had a busy day and was unable to get a good photograph of our little chippy. So, this will have to do.

The Power of 'No'

First off, here's a darling video, put together by the talented Ms. IBIE, of Edie crawling. She just started crawling this weekend:

Now, that's all cute and good. I'm ecstatic for Edie's new abilities and proud of her for catching on with the crawling thing so quickly. I particularly love seeing the look on her face as she explores her environment under her own power.

But this weekend, as she went from proto-crawling to full-fledged crawling, I moved into a new parenting phase. I'll call it the "no" phase. As she found new places to crawl and began interacting with our stuff, I found myself going into the Magic Bag of Parenting Tricks and pulling out "no." "No" to grabbing at lamp cords or the laptop cord, "no" to tearing apart my "Baseball Encyclopedia," "no" to lots of other things.

I'd never said "no" to Edie before this past weekend, at least not consciously. Sure, she'd done things that she shouldn't have been (like pulling on my hair), but I never said "no." Now, I feel like I have to start using "no" as a way to establish boundaries. She needs to start learning that there are consequences to her actions. Look at me: the authoritarian. I've become everything I hate.

To my credit, I'm trying to be positive with my nos (cognitive dissonance, anyone?), remaining firm while conveying understanding. The goal moving forward is to keep reminding myself to back up the "no" with a rationale, even if those points are lost on her (they soon won't be). It can turn into a nasty habit to just say "no" and leave it at that, so I'm going to keep trying to slip bits of reasoning into the mix, if only so Edie knows that every "no" has a "why."

The flip side to seeing a new person flex their wings for the first time is knowing that they'll have to make the same mistakes and resign themselves the same limitations that the rest of us have. Hopefully, with a calm and rational approach, we'll be able to raise a child that knows exactly what all those nos mean.

Twenty Eight Weeks Old

Crawling is still on the agenda for Edith, every day scooting closer and closer to her goal. She is also falling in love with random adult objects such as wood spoons, current editions of Newsweek and (to our dismay) laptop cords. Once she gets the crawling down, we are in big trouble.

Yesterday, we started Edie on her first vegetable. Apparently, she has her mom's taste in vegetables and didn't like the peas we attempted to feed her. We'll try again tonight.

In other news, little Miss EDCC had her 6 month checkup on Monday. Aside from being perfectly healthy, she's also super tough. This time around she had 5 (yes, 5) shots... and cried for less than a minute. Her current stats:

Weight: 14.8 lb (21%)

Length: 26.3 inches long (63%)

Head: 16.8 inches (47%)

Snow Ride

Edie and I went out to my parent's house for a weekend of relaxing and visiting. Yesterday, we went for a little walk down the road. Edie was able to sit (kind of) in the sled, and my mom was able to get a stellar work out.

Pillow Cover

I'm using this blog as another way to motivate myself, can you tell? So, please forgive me in advance. I'm sure my fasciation with posting everything I make will die soon.

I made two pillow covers this morning. The first one, proved to be too small (I didn't measure my pillow well enough), so I made that one into a smaller pillow cover for a smaller pillow. The second attempt seems a little too big, but I blame the tutorial. Aside from that, and my slightly crooked line on one side, it looks pretty good. I even remembered to back stitch.

Our very own Little Sparrow has been chirping away this week. Her cute little voice has now reached an octave I wasn't sure was attainable. It's fun though. The squeaking only occurs when she is delighted, usually by our cat Onslow.

As I've written before, she's well on her way to crawling. This week, she learned how to get on her hands and knees and rock back and forth. She is also sitting up really, really well. Yesterday, somehow, she pulled herself up to sitting. It only happened once, but it was pretty cool.

A Bow

As some of you know, I was lucky enough to receive a sewing machine for my birthday. Actually, it was more like a green light (or, hey! it's your birthday you should splurge) to buy a sewing machine I've eyed for quite awhile.

Here is the bad boy I chose:

Sewing is one of those things I've always wanted to do, but never did it. In high school, I was too busy gossiping with friends to pay attention in Home Ec. And a few years ago when my dear friend Kari tried to teach me to sew, I felt way too overwhelmed a promptly gave up. This time, I have an investment and a little person to sew cute things for. Also, I'm going to begin small and learn the basics before I jump into a huge project.

So, after taking over an hour to figure out how to thread my machine (and, might I say, I can do it very well now) and another couple hours sewing straight lines, I began my first project: a bow. Yep, a bow. Kris had found this project on the cool website Instructables even before I had the machine in my possession. It was super easy to do (even though it took me forever), and proved to be a nice easy going first project.

Do your best to ignore the bad top stitching and so-so gathering. Can I remind you all that it was my first attempt? I'm just happy it sorta resembles a bow.

Twenty Six Weeks Old

She's almost there, she's almost half way to her first birthday. Yep, tomorrow is Edie's half birthday! Friday, she'll be 6 months old. I can't believe it.

Though, from her development I should believe it. There has been lots of talking (or squawking, depending on how you think of it), picking up objects (even really, really tiny objects) and sitting very well by herself. Moreover, crawling is almost a reality... not that it matters, she gets around very well be rolling and scotching around the room. This weekend is another (double) overnight trip to her Grandma and Grandpa Trygstad's house. Everyone is crossing their fingers that it goes well.

Edith + Magnolia

These two little porkchops have not seen each other for quite a few months! Magnolia is the daughter of my wonderful coworker Penny. As you may remember, these two are just hours apart in age and it has been so fun to watch them grow. More and more they are starting to get VERY distinct personalities, which is easily recognizable from these photos.

Edie is continuing her pursuit of crawling. She's almost there, almost. Alas, it's now time for us to get on our hands and knees and locate the small disasters at Edie-level.

New sounds this week as well... some pa, pa, paahs and lots of bbbbbshhhhhs (wet, razzing noise) were the popular noises of week 25. She also had her first solid food meal, which was quite exciting for everyone involved. I now know why my mom stripped me down to my diaper to feed me as an infant.
